Individual Psychology was developed by Alfred Adler. Adler’s goal was to have people understand that painful feelings they may have are due to their own “faulty logic” and not caused by other people. He wanted people to generate healthy, realistic, and rewarding goals for themselves. Adler believed that people can change their current goals and lifestyle in order to attain happier and more fulfilled lives.
Birth order and family constellation are important to individual psychology, which allows a counselor or clinician to better understand a client’s lifestyle, roles in their family, and outlook on life. These concepts have an influence and impact on a person’s development. This can happen while discussing their childhood. Adler believed people are not victims of biology but can chance their lives with their own goals and behaviors for the better. It is important for the analyst to learn and really understand their client in order to help them. During this type of counseling, encouragement and change are emphasized. |
